Gum Disease

Healthy Gums Are Essential For a Healthy Mouth

Healthy gums are pink and firm. They provide a stable foundation for your teeth and protect against bacteria, which is why it is so important to keep them as clean as possible with a thorough home care routine and regular hygienist visits. Hygiene visits differ from regular dental check ups and are often overlooked. Discover the benefits of including seeing the Hygienist as part of your dental routine.

How Does Gum Disease Occur?

Gum disease most often occurs due to a build-up of plaque on the teeth and gum line due to a lack of adequate brushing or flossing. Bleeding after cleaning your teeth, redness or inflammation are the first tell-tale signs of gum disease so it is important to get on top of these as soon as possible.

Other factors known to cause gum disease include smoking, a poor diet, overcrowding in the mouth, diabetes and some medications or medical treatments.

If you ever notice the signs of gum disease or are unsure of a change in your oral health, it is best to reach out to your dentist at the earliest possible moment. Get in touch with us and we will be more than happy to provide you with advice and support.

There Are Two Stages Of Gum Disease:

  1. Gingivitis: The first stage of gum disease is often characterised by swollen gums, redness, soreness and bleeding after brushing. Early identification is the leading way to prevent gum disease from progress into the later stages.
  1. Periodontitis: In comparison, the second stage of gum disease which is more severe involves bone loss around teeth which can become extremely serious. It can lead to loosening of teeth or tooth loss, chronic bad breath and abscesses.

How to Treat Gum Disease

The most effective way to avoid gum disease is to practise a regular and methodical home care routine. This includes brushing at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day. Investing in an electric toothbrush can also be a great way to reduce the build-up of plaque on the teeth.

We will always work with you to improve and enhance your oral care and are committed to ensuring your ongoing gum health. Following any treatments or recommendations we make, our team remains on hand to advise further and conduct routine examinations of your overall oral health.
